On June 21

On this day in ...
...1997 (15 years ago today), at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California, more than 14,000 fans watched the 1st-ever game of the Women's National Basketball Association. (credit for AP photo of ceremonial 2st tip) The home team's guard, Penny Toler, scored the 1st basket, but the New York Liberty went on to beat the Los Angeles Sparks, 67 to 57. Today this professional league comprises 12 teams, based in cities around the United States – among them the Sparks, whose manager is Toler.
