On June 8

On this day in ...
... 2012 (today), Bounty Day is celebrated on Norfolk, an island in the South Pacific that claims many Pitcairn Island emigrés (in 1856, on this day) among its population of just over 2,300 persons. Pitcairn, of course, is the island to which English sailors immediately dispatched themselves following their storied mutiny on the HMS Bounty, a ship captained by the autocratic Captain William Bligh. Today Norfolk is administered by Australia, yet enjoys a measure of self-governance. (credit for photo of Anson Bay, Norfolk)
