On this day in ...... 1978, an archipelago comprising 992 islands in Melanesia, scattered across 461,000 square kilometers (177,993 square miles) of the Pacific Ocean, won independence as a state within the British Commonwealth, having been ruled by Britain for the prior 80 years. The new state, current population of which is about half a million people: Solomon Islands, located northeast of Australia and southwest of Hawai'i.
