On September 13

On this day in ...
Amelie Beese
... 1886, Amelie Beese was born near Dresden, Saxony, Germany. As a young woman she moved to Stockholm, Sweden, to study sculpture, given that German schools did not admit female students. On return home in 1909, she turned to disciplines like engineering, and developed an interest in aviation. She became Germany's 1st woman pilot on her 25th birthday, in 1911. During World I, Beese, by then married to a French man and thus having taken on his citizenship, was put on trial with him as an "undesirable alien." The marriage fell apart after the war, and on December 22, 1925, after having suffered injuries in a plane crash, Beese took her own life at age 39.
